Before there was a film, there was the blog. Check out posts dating back to the inception of the project in April 2008.

The New Taste Sensation

The new drink of the summer is here. A taste sensation that is sure to please - the one, the only, cantaloupe-cucumber agua fresca! Yes, that's right, this delightfully refreshing concoction melds the flavors of two of the most prolific members of the Cucurbit family, turning those vine-ripened jewels into liquid magic. When water just isn't enough, this traditional Mexican drink (literally "fresh water") will surely quench your thirst, not to mention provide a healthy dose of necessary vitamins and minerals. The orange flesh of cantaloupe is packed with Vitamin A and C, delivering over 100% of the recommended daily dosage in a one cup serving size (no risk of scurvy or night blindness here!). It's also a good source of potassium, which is vital to our body's nervous system and muscle function. Cucumbers aren't too shabby themselves, and in addition to providing all of the aforementioned vitamins and minerals (although in lesser amounts), they also supply us with things like dietary fiber, calcium, and phosphorus. And everyone knows that cucumbers are good for your skin!

Mixed with a little lime (from Florida of course), simple syrup, and mint, this agua fresca makes for a sweet and tangy elixir. Serve it up at parties or whenever those pesky cucurbits are in excess. I find it a particularly satisfying beverage when porch-sitting or garden-viewing (see below).

You won't even miss the high fructose corn syrup!

Cantaloupe-Cucumber Agua Fresca (from Deborah Madison's Local Flavors)

4 cups cantaloupe, cut into chunks
1 medium cucumber, peeled and chopped
simple syrup (1:1 mixture of sugar and water; combine and heat until sugar is dissolved)
zest and juice of 1 or 2 limes
handful of mint leaves
2 cups water (use some to help with blending)
mint for garnish

Puree the cantaloupe and cucumber in a blender or food processor just enough to break them up without letting them get too foamy (I add some of the water here, to help with the blending). Pour the juice into a large pitcher; add the syrup to taste, lime zest and juice, and mint. Chill well. Stir in the water and serve over ice. Garnish with mint. Best enjoyed the day that it is made. Serves 6-8.
