Before there was a film, there was the blog. Check out posts dating back to the inception of the project in April 2008.

Food Inc. in Alabama!

Very exciting news - the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa has secured the documentary "Food Inc." for a few screenings here in the Druid City at our historic Bama Theatre (directions here). If you're unfamiliar with the film, check out the website here and some glowing reviews here and here. Note that this film isn't coming to Birmingham or any other city in Alabama anytime soon. If you've been waiting to see the movie, this is your chance.

What's most exciting, is the event we're having on the opening night of the film. On Sunday, August 9th we'll have a reception before the film featuring a cooking demonstration by our chef Adam Weinstein (he of Alabama Supper fame) and a local meal with produce from Snow's Bend and Jones Valley Urban Farm, farm raised Alabama shrimp from Greene Prairie Aquafarm, goat cheese from Belle Chevre, and tasty brews from Good People. After the film we'll have a panel discussion with Edwin Marty from Jones Valley, David Snow from Snow's Bend, Jean Mills from Southern SAWG, and others about what we as Alabamians can do to create a local and sustainable food system for the state. The reception starts at 5:30, the film starts at 7pm.

The opening night reception has a limited number of tickets. $18 entitles you to a local food meal and the film (quite a superb deal, if you ask me). Tickets for just the film are $7 and will be available at the door on a first come, first serve basis. If you're coming from Birmingham, I highly suggest you get it on the meal - there's literally nowhere worth eating on a Sunday night in Tuscaloosa. Sorry, Outback Steakhouse. Tickets to the reception will sell out, so buy them early.

This wonderful event is made possible by the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa, Slow Food Birmingham, East Gate Gallery, and our generous farmers. If you care about local and global food issues, don't miss this event!

Finally - I want to take this opportunity to announce another big event: The Second Alabama Supper. Mark your calendars for the afternoon and evening of Saturday August 29th here in Tuscaloosa. Another all-Alabama meal with friends, farmers, music, and lots of great local food. Stay tuned here for details or send us an email at info(at)eatingalabama.org to be added to our email list.
